Golf club care: Get a grip

Summary: As we enter another golf season, learn why replacing your golf club grips matters more than you might think.

As golfers, when we look to improve our game, we often focus on swing changes, new clubs, or lessons. But one of the most overlooked—and most impactful—upgrades is also one of the simplest: replacing our golf club grips. Fresh grips can improve control, consistency, comfort, and even confidence on the course.

I believe good golfers are informed golfers. Here’s why proper grips matter and how often they should be replaced.

Better control starts with your hands

Your grip is the only connection between you and the club. Over time, grips wear down from sweat, dirt, UV exposure, regular use, and even temperature differences depending on where you store your clubs.

As the grips become smooth and slick, it’s harder to maintain consistent hand placement and pressure. If you don’t have grips that grip you back, you will lose your grip or grip too tightly. Over-gripping can create tension in your hands, wrists, and forearms—ultimately affecting your swing mechanics.

The legendary Sam Snead once said to grip your club like you’re holding a live bird—obviously not too tight but with enough pressure to keep it in place.

New grips restore the tackiness needed to hold the club securely without squeezing too tightly. With less tension, you’re more likely to produce a smoother, more repeatable swing.

Grip size matters, too

Did you know that as we age or even if we change our vocation, our hands can change in size? Replacing your grips also gives you an opportunity to evaluate grip size. Incorrect sizing can promote unwanted wrist action or restrict natural movement. A small adjustment in size can make a noticeable difference in ball flight and consistency.

How often should I replace my grips?

A common rule of thumb is to replace your grips once a year or every 40–60 rounds. But the right timing depends on how often you play and the climate conditions in your area. Grips wear faster in hot and humid conditions, but they can harden and lose feel in cold climates.

If you play often, I suggest you replace them once a season. That’s easy to remember if—like practicing—you make it a part of your pre-season prep. Grips are relatively inexpensive, but they can feel like getting a new set of clubs without the big price tag.

Before your next round, take a moment to check your grips. If they’re showing signs of wear, consider making the switch. Your hands will thank you—and your scorecard could look a whole lot better.
