Summary: Inside the Fieldhouse at SentryWorld, we provide opportunities to learn and compete on six pickleball courts.

There’s a rhythm to pickleball that reveals itself quickly—the sound of the paddle, the pace of play, the easy back-and-forth that invites conversation as much as competition. At the Fieldhouse, it’s a game that brings players together at every skill level, whether you’re picking up a paddle for the first time or refining your approach.

Our team works closely with the Heart of Wisconsin Pickleball Association to help new players learn and feel comfortable on the court.

We’re sharing some basic pickleball information here, but you can also sign up for lessons if that’s a more comfortable starting point for you. We’ll meet you where you are. Whether you’re learning the basics or building consistency, our team is here to guide you with insight and encouragement. And, we can help you learn and compete on up to six pickleball courts.

Start with the essentials

Pickleball seems like a combination of tennis and ping-pong because it’s actually a blend of both.

Like tennis:

The court layout, net, and scoring structure feel familiar. You’re hitting the ball over a net, serving diagonally, and building points through placement and positioning.

Like ping-pong:

The paddle and ball create a similar feel—shorter swings, quicker reactions, and more emphasis on control than power.

Pickleball is played on a smaller court, making it approachable and easy to navigate. You can enjoy the game as singles or doubles, though doubles is most common. Each rally begins with an underhand serve, delivered diagonally across the net.

One pickleball term you’ll hear often is the “kitchen”—the non-volley zone just in front of the net. It’s also the inspiration behind the name of SentryWorld’s Kitchen Commanders league. Players can enter the kitchen, but volleys—hitting the ball out of the air—aren’t allowed while standing inside it.

As you get more comfortable on the court, you’ll start to see how each point develops. The two-bounce rule—the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys begin—slows the pace at the start of each rally, giving players a chance to think through their next shot before faster net play begins.

Individual pickleball court reservations can be made 9 a.m.–9 p.m.!

What you’ll need to play

Getting started doesn’t require much. A pickleball paddle—slightly larger than a ping-pong paddle but lighter than a tennis racquet—and a perforated plastic ball are the essentials. Comfortable court shoes with good grip are recommended for stability and movement.

If you’re a beginner, our Fieldhouse team is happy to offer equipment so you can step onto the court with confidence before investing in your own gear.

A game built for connection

What sets pickleball apart is how naturally it creates interaction. Points move quickly, but the atmosphere stays relaxed. It’s just as much about shared moments as it is about scorekeeping.

At the Fieldhouse, you’ll find players at every skill stage—from those picking up a paddle for the first time to those who know the pace of a well-played match.

Learn the basics, find your comfort zone, and discover what makes the game so easy to enjoy—one rally at a time.
